Game On: Unveiling Gamer Passions

Though often overshadowed by Independence Day celebrations, July 8th is National Video Game Day. With RYA, we can see who is passionate about video game genres like Battle Royale Games, Fighting Games, First-Person Shooter Games, Real-Time Strategy Games, Role Player Games, Simulation Games, and more so we thought this was the perfect occasion to do a deeper dive into gamers.

We created two audiences: Video Game Enthusiasts and Traditional Game Enthusiasts. Demographically, the audiences are nearly identical: millennials who work full-time. However, video gamers skew male while traditional gamers skew female. But where the data gets even more interesting is when looking at the other genres that pop for each group.

Traditional Game Enthusiasts seem more well-rounded than a 20-sided die. Excluding the genres we used to define them such as being interested in board games, card games, lawn games, game shows and bar sports, their top genres weren't about gaming at all. Road Trips, Comedy, Pets, and Cooking/Baking/Grilling were next on the list. Then back to game-like pursuits like Puzzles (including sudoku, Wordle, and jigsaw).

Video Game Enthusiasts, on the other (controller-holding) hand, have some game-related genres like Technology and Action/Adventure that tie to video gaming but seem to enjoy other adrenaline-boosting genres like Theme Parks and Horror.

While there’s no cheat code to knowing your audience, RYA’s pretty close. With over 60,000 respondents, RYA can tell you what any audience is truly passionate about - down to 1% of the U.S. population.
